TECH TWOFER: RECYCLE USED GEAR, COLLECTIVEGOOD.COM DONATES TO YOUR FAVE CHARITY

One man's tech trash is another man's tech toy. Or at least can be, thanks to a cool organization -- and you'll be making two donations in one!

Recycle your unwanted phones, PDAs, pagers, and accessories though Collectivegood.com. They even provide a postage-paid label. Your discarded gear will get refurbished and restored for use in a developing country. If your device can't be reused, it will be recycled according to EPA guidelines.

Now the twofer part: for each phone you send, Collectivegood will make a donation to your favorite charity.

Give and let give. What better slogan to put into practice this holiday season.

FILM & SCI FI LOVERS DEAL: Join the Academy of Science Fiction, save hundreds on film tickets

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following deal came to me from my friend, actor/director JEFF RECTOR. I edited his deal-invitation slightly, but the essence and facts remain unchanged.

Tis’ the Season to give, and what better gift to a film lover than a membership to The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Film Society. Here is what you get: over 100 screenings of new movies (usually before they are released in Theaters) that you can bring a guest or loved one to. There are 1- 4 screenings every week on Saturday at the Royal Theater (West LA) and Sunday at USC’s Frank Sinatra Theater (USC campus, downtown LA).

The membership fee is NORMALLY $120.00 for the year for over 100 first-run films. But readers of The Rose Review can join for only $100.00 for the entire year, which begins December 1st. Let’s do the Math: at today’s movie ticket prices (at least $7.50 per person x 2 = $15.00), $15.00 (that you’d normally spend) X 100 movies = $1500. So, membership in the ASFFHFS means a savings of $1400. Good deal huh? Screenings are always the latest and greatest releases, so you really can't go wrong with this deal.

To join, just print out the application form on the website (http://www.saturnawards.org/membership.html) and send a check or money order made out to: The Academy of Science Fiction. Remember to take your discount! Make the check out for $100 (instead of the normal $120!) - and be sure to write “JeffRector/DonRose Referral” at the top of your membership application so your discount will be honored! Put Film Society Membership in the memo area of the check and you can write it off: we are a non-profit organization. I look forward to meeting and talking with the new members at upcoming screenings and events.

Sincerely,
Jeff Rector
